A Liverpool dentist has issued a warning over the safety of travelling abroad for cosmetic dental treatment after online searches rocketed following the launch of the new series of Love Island.

Within 24 hours of the programme airing, searches linked to cosmetic dentistry increased by 10,000%. The reality show, which is set in Mallorca, is famed for its glamorous contestants, many of whom have pristine white smiles due to undergoing procedures like tooth whitening, cosmetic bonding and veneers.

Dr John Hewitt, principal dentist at Smmmile, has warned of the dangers of ‘Turkey Teeth’ a phenomenon, which has seen thousands of Brits travelling to countries like Turkey in the last few years to achieve bright white smiles. Dr Hewitt said that young people are often unaware of the long-term implications of having treatments like veneers and crowns, particularly in countries where the standards of care may not be as high as in the UK. With a full set of crowns, for example, the natural tooth structure is shaved right down to stumps. Crowns only last around 10-15 years, meaning that people in their 20s or 30s will need to replace their crowns several times.

Dr Hewitt suggested that many of the stars who have inspired young people to travel abroad for treatment, such as Molly Mae Hague and Gemma Owen, are likely to have had treatment in the UK, but going overseas is much more affordable for fans of reality TV shows. Social media also targets users through advertising and promotions, encouraging people to look for deals and offers. Typically, treatments that cost around £15,000 in the UK are available for under £5,000 in Turkey.

Dr Hewitt encouraged anyone who is thinking about having cosmetic treatment abroad to get quotes in the UK and ensure that they are fully aware of what treatment entails and how it will impact them in the future. More and more dentists in the UK are seeing patients who need remedial treatment after having work done overseas, which ends up costing them a lot more money.
